Post Style & Size

Edited

Choosing the right size post will ensure your fence and gates perform well for years to come.

Whilst post size and layout also play a role in the overall aesthetics of the fence (you can read more on that here), this article will focus only on the structural suitability of different posts styles and profiles in different scenarios.

Typically, flanged (bolt down) posts will be 100mm longer than the chosen fence height (e.g. 1300mm long post on a 1200mm high panel). On the other hand, inground posts should be buried at least 500-600mm into the ground (e.g. by using a 1800mm long post for an 1200mm high panel).

The table below provides a strength comparison for posts that are fixed only at the ground level or below. It does not consider if the post can be fixed at additional points above ground level, such as to a block or brick wall, retaining wall or other existing substrate. Having these additional fixing points will increase the strength of flanged posts making them suitable to all applications.
